It’s hard to overlook when Facebook comes to town.
On April 9, Facebook hosted an event in Columbus, Ohio, with Aware (formerly Wiretap). The event, aptly named Thrive: Capture the Power of Connected Employees, garnered the attention of internal communications and IT leaders across Ohio and its surrounding states. With around 170 attendees at the live event and even more professionals who viewed the event via Aware’s livestream, Thrive made a splash in the local communications world.

Aware nailed down an impressive list of speakers, including Workplace by Facebook’s Director of Global Sales Lesley Young, who kicked off the event with a reality check. She explained the future of work by saying, “People coming into work today expect you to have a different kind of relationship. They expect you to use the technology we use in our personal lives.”

Cary Basham Young is the CEO of Talk Social To Me, a firm that works with internal communication and IT professionals to increase employee engagement on companywide social networks. As a professional who has assisted several Fortune 100 and 500 companies transition into using online social collaboration platforms, she proved to be a fountain of knowledge for attendees who are hoping to integrate Workplace by Facebook in the future.
It didn’t take long for Jaime McMahon, VP of Sales and Marketing for Linezero, to earn a round of applause from the audience. His proclamations that “Email is not your job,” and “Email is someone else’s to-do list,” further established the overarching theme of the event: Communication methods are changing, and employees expect more personal and authentic ways to collaborate with each other.

After a few speakers introduced why social networks in the workplace are beneficial, Aware’s Chief Product Officer Matt Pasternack took the stage to put into perspective how their product can further “remove the red tape” from potential compliance, security and HR concerns.
Companies such as Chevron and Oxfam International already understand the advantages Aware brings to digital communications platforms. Representatives from these companies, including Christina Coleridge (Enterprise Social Network Strategist at Chevron) and Morgane Bradley (Digital Workplace Communications Lead at Oxfam), delved into how implementing Workplace by Facebook has impacted their individual organizations on a panel led by Aware’s CEO Jeff Schumann. In addition to the aforementioned powerhouse communicators, Ohio’s Lt. Governor Jon Husted spoke about Columbus’ unique positioning to become a leader in innovation in the Midwest.
Cocktails and networking wrapped up the evening, along with complimentary headshots by InternalCommsPro, an Ohio-based organization that’s aimed at bringing together communications professionals.
